Why isn't my print sticking to the bed? – Causes & Solutions

One of the most common frustrations in 3D printing: The print detaches during printing or doesn't adhere to the bed at all. Without a good first layer, every project becomes a nuisance. In this article, you'll learn the most common causes and practical solutions to ensure your prints adhere reliably to the bed.

1. Check bed leveling

Incorrect leveling is the main cause of adhesion problems. If the nozzle is too far from the bed, the filament won't adhere. If it's too close, the nozzle will clog.

👉 Solution:

  • Adjust the bed precisely using a sheet of paper or automatic calibration.
  • Make sure the distance is even across the entire surface.

2. Clean print bed

Residues of grease, dust or fingerprints prevent adhesion.

👉 Solution:

  • Clean the bed regularly with isopropanol (IPA) .
  • Do not use glass cleaners as these often leave residue.
  • If necessary, wash gently with detergent and dry thoroughly.

3. Set the correct temperature

The filament adheres better when the bed and nozzle are at the right temperatures.

👉 Recommended guidelines:

  • PLA: Bed 50–65 °C
  • ABS: Bed 90–110 °C
  • ASA: Bed 90–110 °C
  • TPU: Bed 40–60 °C

4. Print speed & fan

Starting too quickly or cooling too much can prevent the first layer from adhering.

👉 Solution:

  • Print the first layer at reduced speed (20–30 mm/s).
  • Turn off or significantly reduce the fan for the first few shifts.

5. Use liability aids

Sometimes a smooth printing plate is not enough.

👉 Options:

  • BuildTak, PEI or texture plates
  • Glue stick or special 3D printing adhesive spray
  • Enable Brim or Raft in the print settings to increase the contact area.

Conclusion

Good adhesion to the print bed is the foundation for successful prints. With proper leveling, a clean bed, correct temperatures, and, if necessary, adhesion aids, you can reliably achieve perfect first layers.
